Beach safety warning issued by Burnham Coastguards after mud scare

A fresh warning about the dangers of wading through mud to reach the sea in the Burnham-On-Sea area has been issued following a scare at Brean on Sunday (May 29th).

Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea and Weston, plus a rescue hovercraft frrom BARB Search & Rescue, were called to the beach at 4.20pm to help three persons seen struggling in the mud next to Brean Down.

The trio made their way back to safe ground under the guidance of the Coastguard and were issued with safety advice.

"Our advice is always to heed the warning signs and stay away from the muddy areas of the beach," said a spokesman. "Check the tide times and never try to reach the sea at low tide."

"If you see someone that you think is in danger and are concerned for them, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were also called out at 3.15pm on Sunday to search for a missing child on Brean beach who was found safe and well nearby shortly afterwards.
