British Transport Police say a man was tragically struck by a train, prompting the closure of the line between Weston and Taunton.

A spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Shortly before 7pm on Saturday, we were called to Bridgwater station after reports that a person was struck by a train.”

“Officers attended alongside local paramedics however a 49-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed.”

“The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Great Western Railway suspended services for several hours through the Burnham-On-Sea area, with Highbridge station closed until after 9pm.
