Burnham-On-Sea Library has launched a new summer holiday reading challenge for local youngsters.

The Somerset Libraries initiative aims to encourage children to read during the summer holidays, a time when a child’s reading habits typically reduce.

This year’s theme is ‘The Big Friendly Read’, celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Roal Dhal.

“The Big Friendly Read, the Summer Reading Challenge 2016, is your child’s free chance to join in the celebrations of 100 years of Roald Dahl,” a spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“On the Summer Reading Challenge, we ask each child to read at least six library books. They can be any books they like – novels, facts books and audio books, they all count – and your library will have staff and volunteers on hand to help your children choose books they will really enjoy.”

“As they read their books, each child will receive collector cards that make up a set to complete their folder.”

“These build to become a unique record of your child’s Summer Reading Challenge. Read six books and they get a unique medal.”
