Burnham and Highbridge to fall silent on Armistice Day

-

Ceremonies to mark Armistice Day are being held in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge today (Friday, November 11th).

Burnham’s ceremony will take place next to the town flag pole in Pier Street starting from 10.45am when residents are welcome to join in. The Mayor Cllr Michael Clarke is due to lead the proceedings and two minutes silence.

In Highbridge a short service will be held in the Memorial Gardens at Southwell House, starting at 10.30am. The service will be conducted by local clergy and a wreath will be laid. All will be welcome.

The day is observed on November 11th to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”, in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente that morning.
