Highbridge’s King Alfred School competes at Somerset Rugby Festival

-

Highbridge’s King Alfred School sent a team of eleven Year 9 and 10 girls to Somerset’s Girls Rugby Festival.

The girls, who have been having skill sessions with Mr Shepherd and RFU Community Rugby Coach Chris Hurd since February, played in conditioned ‘Grab Tackle’ games against Bridgwater College Academy, Chilton Trinity, Robert Blake, Stanchester of Yeovil, and St Katherine’s of Gordano.

“None of the girls had played competitive contact rugby before and they took to it like ducks to water,” said Mr Shepherd.

“They won two, drew two and lost one, however and certainly more importantly, every girl played their part. There were smiles and laughter in abundance – even during the ice showers that interspersed the afternoon.”

“There were twelve schools in all and it was fantastic to see so many girls enjoying the games regardless of the results.”

“The King Alfred girls were a real credit, superb behaviour and attitude both on and off the pitch.”
