Burnham-On-Sea fire crews tackle Wedmore silage pit blaze

-

Burnham-On-Sea fire crews tackled a large blaze in a silage pit at Wedmore on Thursday (August 11th).

One appliance from Cheddar, two from Burnham-On-Sea and one from Bridgwater, along with a water carrier from Bridgwater, were sent to the incident at 6.20am to a barn in Poolbridge Road.

Firefighters surrounded the fire using three attack jets, one compressed air foam jet, one safety jet and drag forks.

“Crews arrived on scene, confirmed the fire was well alight and got to work setting up a hydrant with one main jet,” said a spokesman.

“Crews soon requested further assistance of a further two appliances from Glastonbury and Wells. The incident command unit from Street and a telehandler from Exeter were also mobilised. Crews attacked the fire using two compressed air foam jets.”

The barn measured 25 metres by 50 metres and was part open, and a large area of silage was covered by tarpaulin and tyres.

Just before 10am, the incident commander confirmed that the fire was out. Crews extinguished the fire involving a barn containing silage, tyres and plastic sheeting. The cause of the fire was accidental.
