second swimming pool plan in Burnham wins council approval
for a new £300,000 second swimming pool and expanded facilities
at Burnham-On-Sea's Swim and Sports Academy were last night (Monday)
given a 'thumbs up' by town councillors.
proposals for a new toddler's pool, sauna, two new fitness studios
and a spa - which were first reported here
last week - were given approval by Burnham and Highbridge Town
Council's Planning Applications Committee.
Bill Hancock said: "We should support this 100% - it's great
to see this level of investment in our town. It's also great for
youngsters and, who knows, we could have a future Olympic champion.
It's great to see the owners re-investing in the community."
Andy Brewer said: "The learner pool would be fantastic - it's
just what Burnham needs" while Cllr Victoria Weavell added:
"It would be brilliant for young children. The existing pool
is too cool and too deep for very young children so this would be
on the committee unanimously backed the scheme. The final decision
is subject to approval from the full council and Sedgemoor District
Sara Cox-Conklin said afterwards: "This is great news - an
exciting first step."
new building is planned for the vacant land at the front of the
site next to Berrow Road, to the east of the current pool building.
Cox-Conklin said: "The proposed new second 5x10m pool will
be a warmer water facility than our current one and will be aimed
at young children, babies and mums so we can provide classes from
a much earlier age."
existing 13 spin classes are hugely popular so we're also adding
two new cardio studios with extra equipment in addition to a new
sauna and spa. We're super pleased with the plans, which continue
the development of the Academy. We offer much more than just the
original swimming pool."
