£300k second swimming pool plan in Burnham wins council approval

Plans for a new £300,000 second swimming pool and expanded facilities at Burnham-On-Sea's Swim and Sports Academy were last night (Monday) given a 'thumbs up' by town councillors.

The proposals for a new toddler's pool, sauna, two new fitness studios and a spa - which were first reported here last week - were given approval by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council's Planning Applications Committee.

Cllr Bill Hancock said: "We should support this 100% - it's great to see this level of investment in our town. It's also great for youngsters and, who knows, we could have a future Olympic champion. It's great to see the owners re-investing in the community."

Cllr Andy Brewer said: "The learner pool would be fantastic - it's just what Burnham needs" while Cllr Victoria Weavell added: "It would be brilliant for young children. The existing pool is too cool and too deep for very young children so this would be welcome."

Councillors on the committee unanimously backed the scheme. The final decision is subject to approval from the full council and Sedgemoor District Council.

Co-owner Sara Cox-Conklin said afterwards: "This is great news - an exciting first step."

The new building is planned for the vacant land at the front of the site next to Berrow Road, to the east of the current pool building.

Mark Cox-Conklin said: "The proposed new second 5x10m pool will be a warmer water facility than our current one and will be aimed at young children, babies and mums so we can provide classes from a much earlier age."

"Our existing 13 spin classes are hugely popular so we're also adding two new cardio studios with extra equipment in addition to a new sauna and spa. We're super pleased with the plans, which continue the development of the Academy. We offer much more than just the original swimming pool."
