Charity swimmers splash for cash at Brean’s annual Swimarathon

-

Over £2,000 is expected to have been raised for local charities after dozens of people from across the Burnham-On-Sea area took part in a sponsored swim in Brean on Sunday (February 7th).

The fifth annual Swimarathon, run by Burnham Rotary Club, saw ten teams swimming lengths of Brean Splash pool.

55 swimmers took part, achieving a total between them of 2,540 lengths of the pool, which equates to some 64km – roughly the distance from Burnham to Exeter.

The teams’ final sponsorship totals have not yet been calculated but are believed to be in excess of £2000.

Organiser, Rotarian Terry Spragg, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This has once again been a most successful Swimarathon. The Club is grateful to the owners and staff of Brean Splash for their hospitality and facilities, to the sponsors of the medals awarded to participants and to everyone else who worked so hard to make this event a success.”

Burnham Rotary Club’s President Ashley Edwards added: “We were delighted with the number of swimmers taking part this year. “A great time was had by everyone, with lots of enthusiasm on show, and a good sum has been raised for charity.”

Among those taking part were Burnham Inner Wheel, Brent Knoll School, Brent Knoll Girl Guides, Berrow Guides, Burnham RNLI, Monarchs Gymnastics Group and Brean Splash. The event is set to return in early February in 2017.
