Town Council 'has considered moving into Burnham town centre'

Burnham and Highbridge Town Council's Clerk told a meeting last night (Wednesday) that a number of options have previously been considered to move the council into a more prominent town centre location.

It comes after Neville Jones, a former Mayor, told earlier this week that the council should consider moving out of its current building and into a premises in the town centre to save money and make it easier for residents to access its services.

Town Clerk Denise Emery told Wednesday's meeting of the council's Policy and Finance Committee: "This Town Council has looked at various options over the years in the town centre."

"We informally looked at the Job Centre, where the cost was far too prohibitive. And we looked at the Manor House which at that time needed an awful lot of money spent on it."

She added: "I would point out that if we sold Jaycroft Road and moved anywhere else we would not simply be able to use the capital to offset revenue or give it back to tax payers as suggested by Mr Jones. That isn't possible."

Cllr Phil Harvey asked during the meeting for an assurance that tens of thousands of pounds worth of repairs needed to the roof of the Old Courthouse in Jaycroft Road would not be undertaken before a dicussion about the future of the building.
