Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor and Mayoress were the special guests at the town’s twinning group annual lunch this week.

Mayor Michael Clarke, Patron of the Burnham-On-Sea & Highbridge Fritzlar Twinning Society, and Mayoress Maria Clarke attended the event at Batch Country Hotel in Lympsham, alongside Chairman Chris Metcalfe, pictured here.

“The lunch is an annual event for members and friends, which brings us together to relax and celebrate in the post-Christmas gloom over a delicious three course meal,” said the group’s Gillian Lyne.

“37 attended, including new friends from the Taunton-Koenigsluetter Twinning, introduced by a member of the Bridgwater German class, who travelled with us to Fritzlar last August for the 25th Anniversary (our 26th) of our link. The nine day holiday also included visits to Bruges, Cologne, the Moehne Dam and the World’s highest ski jump at Willingen.”

This summer, a group of 35, including a young family, will be visiting Burnham and Highbridge from 17th-21st July. Most will be home-hosted by local families and their programme of visits and entertainment will be funded by the Twinning Society.

The group holds monthly meetings, usually with a speaker on topics ranging from Flamenco to Assistance Dogs for the Disabled, local History and ‘German’ themes.

We also run regular social and fundraising events. Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to speak German or be a member, just come along and try it on the third Wednesday of each month at St John’s Church Hall, Highbridge, 2-4 pm.
