VIDEO: Big waves hit seafront in Burnham-On-Sea during stormy tide

-

Strong onshore winds whipped up big waves that gave Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront a battering on Tuesday (October 18th).

The highest tides of the year, combined with the gusty westerly winds, saw plumes of spray shooting over the sea wall, as pictured here.

While there was no flooding in Burnham-On-Sea, the Environment Agency has warned of a continued risk of flooding along low lying parts of the Bristol Channel this week.

Coastguards also warned beach walkers and motorists to take extra caution by taking note of tide times.

A Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard Officer spokesman said: “We do advise people to take extra care as there will be a greater risk of getting into difficulty during this week’s high tides. Check the tide times and stay away from areas where you might get cut-off or into danger.”

The flood gates at the top of the jetty have been closed by the Environment Agency as a precaution with staff watching nearby, as pictured here.

Crews from the Coastguard, BARB Search & Rescue and the RNLI are always on call as usual to respond to incidents.
