Friends of Burnham-On-Sea Beach marks first year with record turnout

The first anniversary of the formation of the Friends of Burnham-On-Sea Beach was marked on Saturday (September 16th) with a beach clean.

The volunteers met at the entrance to the River Brue by the sailing club to remove rubbish washed up along the river banks and beaches.

"The Friends of Burnham Beach celebrated their first anniversary with a record turnout of 25 volunteers who collected a record amount of waste," organiser Mark Hollidge told

"Some of the volunteers came from as far afield as Bristol - such dedication. One of the volunteers was local MP James Heappey, who together with his son got well involved with the clean-up on the banks of the estuary."

"Some of the more unusual items discovered were two car tyres, several bread baskets and a large gas canister."

He thanked all who had come along and said the next clean-up will be in October - with the date, time and venue to be decided.
