Berrow starts work on grass bank around village green to halt travellers

Work has begun this week on building a new grass bank around Berrow Village Green to prevent travellers from setting up camp there again this summer.

Berrow Parish Council's contractors, JD Pope & Sons, started the work on Wednesday (March 29th), as pictured here.

The council hopes that the grass 'bund' will avoid a repeat of last summer when a large group of travellers set up camp there for several weeks.

Barry Kew, Berrow Parish Council Chairman, told "The Parish Council and residents are very pleased that work has started on the bund."

"It should prevent vehicle access, except for any contractors working for the Parish Council. It will be grassed and its eventual height will be about 2 foot with several 1.2 mtr (4 foot) gaps for pedestrian and buggy access."

"There will also be locked drop-down posts to prevent vehicle access from bridleways."

The work is scheduled to take approximately 1–2 weeks to complete. The council has apologised for any instances where sections of the pavement alongside the Green may be temporarily inaccessible during the work.

JD Pope plans to install temporary posts and plastic fencing around each of the mounds to allow the earth to settle and the grass to become established - the council has asked for people and animals to keep off the mounds.
