In Photos: Cattle and caravans saved in Brean farm blaze drama

Scores of cattle and caravans were saved from a big fire which broke out at a Brean farm on Friday evening and was still being tackled by crews during Saturday.

These photos show the ferocity of the blaze, which required six fire crews from across the area to bring it under control.

One woman was treated for the effects of smoke inhalation during the blaze at Brean Farm in Brean Down Road where a large barn, measuring 100m x 50m, was well alight.

Fire engines from Burnham-On-Sea, Cheddar and Bridgwater, along with a water carrier from Bridgwater, were initially sent to reports of a barn alight.

A spokesman said: "Crews got to work with a hose reel jet and a main jet fighting the fire and protecting surrounding buildings."

"The officer in charge then requested the attendance of a further three fire engines to make the count up to six."

"These were sent from Nether Stowey, Glastonbury and Wells. An incident command unit was also sent from Wiveliscombe."

The incident continued overnight into Saturday, with crews dampening down hotspots and carrying out a watching brief allowing the straw in the barn to burn out under controlled circumstances.

On Saturday afternoon, the crews continued to make steady progress, damping down as silage was removed when two fire appliances were in attendance.

At 5pm on Saturday, two fire appliances from Wells and Burnham were still on scene with progress being made with the removal of silage.

An eyewitness told that holidaymakers helped to move caravans and animals to safety in the initial stages of the incident.

"The fire was in a large barn full of winter feed and was well alight," said one eyewitness.

"Holidaymakers from nearby Channel View caravan park, beach wardens and staff from Warren Farm rushed to Brean Farm to help move the cows, tractors from adjoining barns, and a large number of caravans from the caravan storage area."

He added: "A safe area was created to make a fire break so the flames didn't spread."

"No customer caravans in the storage area were damaged, but this fire could have been a lot worst had it not been for everyone who helped."

A spokesperson from Brean Farm said: "We would like to reassure you that everyone is OK, including the animals."

"Thanks to the heroic efforts of Channel View customers, neighbours and bystanders all caravans in storage were moved away from the source of the fire. The fire brigade confirmed there were no caravans damaged."

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and an investigation is underway.
