Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards in night water rescue training exercise

A high tide and bracing wind provided ideal conditions for a water rescue training exercise by Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards on Wednesday evening (March 1st).

Several members of the team took part in a 'lanyarding exercise' while attached to a safety line, which is often used when attempting to reach a casualty who is stuck on a causeway or similar.

"With the winds whipping up some good sized waves it was an exercise that tested the team," said Coastguard Officer Dave Welland.

"The safety spotters were on hand with throw lines, providing a safe overwatch of proceedings as the team worked fast along the railings and back as the cold water thumped against the walkway creating some impressive spray."

"We train in hard conditions to ensure that when the real thing happens, we are prepared."

"If the seas are rough do not enter the water or try wave dodging as you could be swept away, it may seem fun but your safety is not worth it. If you see anyone in difficulty along the coast don't delay Dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
