Burglary at Burnham-On-Sea Children's Society shop dismays charity

Mean-spirited burglars smashed their way into a Burnham-On-Sea charity shop early on Friday (March 31st), stealing a quantity of stock.

The glass door of The Children's Society in Burnham High Street was smashed in the early hours of the morning, say Police.

Val Newbold, The Children's Society's regional retail manager, told "The incident occurred between 1-3am on Friday morning when someone smashed our glass front door to gain entry and then grabbed a lot of stock."

"We are shocked to have been targeted in this way and may now have to look at introducing metal shutters which will be an extra expense that takes away funds from vulnerable children."

"We are well supported in Burnham and the shop is well respected by many residents. We are really sad and disappointed that the shop has been broken into - we not only lost stock, but a day's trade due to the clean-up and glass repairs."

Police spokesman Wayne Baker told "We received reports that a charity shop was being broken into early on Friday morning in the High Street."

"A number of items were reported missing from the shop and Police enquiries are continuing. Anyone with information should call 101 and quote reference 5217070567."
