Burnham-On-Sea cyclists raise concerns over poor state of town roads

Cyclists in Burnham-On-Sea have this week raised concerns about the poor condition of roads in the town.

Potholes and crumbling surfaces have appeared during recent months, including on The Esplanade, as pictured here near the junction with Cross Street.

"The winter seems to have left its mark on many of our busy roads," says one Burnham cyclist, Martin Cook, who is calling on Somerset County Council to address the issues.

"The poor state of The Esplanade and others in and around the town puts cyclists at risk, and can cause accidents or damage to bikes."

Emily Worthington, a spokesperson for Somerset County Council, told that one of its Highways Inspectors has reviewed The Esplanade this week.

"The worst areas have been added to the planned patching programme for the next financial year. The full length of the road has also been added to the list of roads to be prioritised for future resurfacing works," she confirmed.

"Planned safety inspections will continue to be carried out on a routine basis to ensure the highway is maintained to a safe condition."
