Burnham-On-Sea's Coastguards and BARB become 'dementia friends'

Six months after its formation, further progress is being made by the Burnham and Highbridge Dementia Action Alliance Group in making both towns both more dementia-aware and more accessible.

On Wednesday, Burnham-On-Sea’s Coastguards and volunteers from BARB Search & Rescue undertook their training.

A Coastguard spokesman said: "A lot of times we are tasked to search for missing vulnerable people. This can be for a variety of reasons, due to the weather, medical and mental health issues and more."

"So this week along with BARB we were given a great talk about Dementia sufferers."

"Karen David is a Dementia Champion and in her spare time gives fantastic talks about Dementia and what we can all do to help, not only people with Dementia but also their family members. This is done simply by recognising and accepting Dementia sufferers as the person they are."

"We gained some insights on how to best deal with Dementia sufferers, whom we have been tasked to search for. All signed up to become Dementia Friends."
