Two arrested by Police after suspected arson attack in West Huntspill

-

Two people have been arrested following a suspicious fire in West Huntspill at the weekend, police have said this week.

As first reported here, firefighters were called to tackle a huge barn blaze in Sloway Lane on Saturday which destroyed a barn and burnt thousands of pounds worth of straw inside.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles around and fire crews said they suspected that the blaze had been deliberately set.

Police spokeswoman Miriam Brown told Burnham-On-Sea.com last night: “There have been two arrests in connection with suspected criminal damage and arson, and a number of children have also been spoken to.”

She added that Burnham-On-Sea Police investigations are “ongoing” although Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater were sent to Sloway Lane, West Huntspill just after 3pm, as pictured here, to battle the blaze.

“A barn measuring 30 metres x 20 metres containing over 150 big bales of straw was well alight,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com at the scene.

“We got to work with a main jet and a compressed air foam jet to prevent the fire spreading and then held a watching brief to allow the straw to safely burn.”

A telehandler was also used to remove some bales from within the barn while crews battled the fire.

Police shut Sloway Lane while crews tackled the incident and fire crews and Police are investigating the cause of the blaze amid suspicion that it may have been set deliberately.
