A big golf tournament taking place in Burnham-On-Sea this week is delivering a boost to the town’s economy.

144 players from across Europe are playing in the English Boys Under 16 Amateur Championships at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club.

“It’s the biggest event we’ve hosted here in Burnham for many years,” club secretary Karen Drake told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“Alongside the players are parents and organisers with many hundreds of extra people in the town this week.”

John Edwards, Chairman of Burnham-On-Sea Chamber of Trade, welcomed the event: “It’s great to have a big tournament like this taking place in Burnham, providing a boost to local businesses. The golf course is a superb asset to the town.”

“Many local accommodation providers – hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses – have been full to capacity this week and the town centre’s restaurants and shops have been busier than usual which is great to see.”

One of the Burnham guesthouses that’s been full this week is St Aubyn’s Guesthouse in Berrow Road.

Owner Mark Leeson told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been a very busy week for us with golfers staying here for the five nights of the tournament from Germany, Spain, Norway and from across the UK.”

“It’s also been good to see Burnham’s restaurants like La Vela, the Mitre and the Chandni all benefiting too.”
