High winds in Burnham-On-Sea area bring down trees and cut power

High winds brought down trees and caused damage in Burnham-On-Sea and the surrounding area on Tuesday (June 6th).

Winds gusting over 60mph battered the area through the day after a night of heavy rain.

A tree was blown over by the force of the winds in St Mary's Road, Burnham, as pictured above, blocking it until it could be safely removed.

The gales whipped up stormy sea conditions along the coastline, with big waves slamming into Brean Down, as pictured above.

Power cables were brought down across the road in Highbridge's Tregillis Close, and Western Power Distribution was called in to repair the damage and restore power to homes in the area. There were other power cuts in Brean and Berrow.

The stormy sea conditions were also seen in Burnham and prompted a warning from Coastguards advising walkers to keep at a safe distance.

A recently-opened outdoor inflatable assault course at Middlemoor Splash between East Huntspill and Woolavington was also devastated by the storm. "The anchoring points were broken away and the damaged equipment was everywhere," said the park's Reece Willows. "I am so very, very saddened by this massive loss of equipment and investment but we are determined to be back open soon."
