Hopes of a new owner for Burnham-On-Sea's former job centre dashed

Hopes that a new owner has been found for Burnham-On-Sea's former job centre have been dashed this week.

Contractors have been installing scaffolding at the property during recent days as work to repair the building gets underway, prompting hopes that a new owner had been found for the long-vacant property.

But a spokeswoman for estate agents Alder King told "Unfortunately, no new buyer has been found for the property. The current scaffolding work on the building is underway to keep it maintained - it's not for a new owner moving in."

Burnham's Mayor Cllr Michael Clarke told "While its disappointing that a new owner has not been found, it's good to see the work underway that will hopefully make it more appealing for a future tenant."

The building, at the junction of the High Street and Regent Street, has been vacant since the former job centre closed in March 2008.

The Department for Work and Pensions vacated it on 31st January 2009 and handed the building over to Telereal Trillium.

The lease for the premises expires on 31st December 2018. Although the lease is still in the name of the Secretary of State, it is ‘virtually assigned’ to Telereal Trillium.
