Burnham man Owen Pellow in court charged with killing Lisa Thornton

A Burnham-On-Sea man who has been charged with the murder of 36-year-old Lisa Thornton in the town appeared in court on Saturday.

Police said on Friday evening that Owen Pellow, 42, of Berrow Road had been charged with the murder of the woman, whom they named as Lisa Marie Thornton, 36.

Bristol Magistrate’s Court heard on Saturday that 36-year-old Lisa was his former partner.

Pellow, who appeared in the dock in a grey T-shirt. His solicitor Sally Donaldson indicated that Pellow, who spoke to confirm his date of birth and address, would plead not guilty.

Lucy Coleman, for the prosecution, told the hearing that the victim is the defendant's ex-partner.

Pellow is due to appear again for a bail hearing on Tuesday November 28th at Bristol Crown Court when he will stay in prison and use a video link.

Police were initially called to the property - next to the Co-Op store in Berrow Road - just after 7.30am on Thursday November 23rd.

The Great Western Air Ambulance, pictured below, landed at the nearby Burnham and Berrow golf course, but took off without a casualty a short time later.

Police spokesman Wayne Baker told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "Efforts were made to revive the woman but sadly she died at about 8.15am."

A Great Western Air Ambulance Charity spokeswoman added: "First Great Western Air Ambulance Charity critical care team were called to an incident in Burnham-On-Sea shortly after 7.30am and we were on scene within 16 minutes. Our thoughts are with the family."

Nearby residents have spoken of their shock at the incident. One lady told us: "I was out dog walking in the area at around 7.20am and I saw five police cars parked outside the Co-Op followed by the air ambulance. It's a huge shock to hear this has happened and our thoughts and prayers go to the family."

Another resident added: "We saw the green air ambulance circling over the village and coming into land, then later in the day noticed the lane next to the Co-Op fenced off. Everyone is incredibly sad for the family and wishes them well."
