Wessex Learning Trust to display plans for new school in Highbridge

Plans for a new school near Highbridge, which would accommodate up to 420 pupils, are set to go on show in the town during July.

Wessex Learning Trust (WLT) has unveiled its proposals to establish the Wessex Church of England Primary Academy to cater for children living on the planned new housing developments at Brue Farm and Isleport.

The state funded school will cater for children aged 4-11 and was part of the original Brue Farm plans, featured by here.

The plans are set to be submitted to the Department for Education (DfE) in the autumn this year.

Meanwhile, local people are being encouraged to have their say on the scheme by attending an information event at Highbridge Community Hall in Market Street on Wednesday July 12th from 3.30pm-6.30pm.

Representatives of the WLT will be on hand to answer questions about the plans.

The trust already runs several local schools, and says it will work with its Axbridge and Weare Church of England First Schools and the Hugh Sexey CofE Middle School. It aims to deliver 'high-quality provision and leadership' supported by the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

If the plans are approved, Wessex CofE Primary Academy will open with up to two Reception classes of 30 children and a nursery, subject to demand.

A spokesperson for the trust added: "The school will be free to attend and highly inclusive with a distinctive Church of England character, and will offer its pupils the opportunity to grow and develop under-pinned by Christian values."

"It will provide parents with an additional choice of high quality education with strong pastoral care for their children. WLT, governors and staff will work relentlessly to ensure that every pupil achieves their maximum potential in a safe, supportive, high-expectation and caring environment."

The opening date will be agreed with the Department for Education and Somerset County Council following a successful application.

Both Brue Farm and Isleport are undergoing major expansion plans with hundreds of new homes being planned.
