Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow churchgoers collect 137 giftboxes for seafarers

-

Kind-hearted members from St Andrew’s Church in Burnham-On-Sea and St Mary’s Church in Berrow have delivered dozens of shoeboxes full of gifts to the Mission to Seafarers at Portbury Dock.

A total of 137 shoeboxes have been filled with gifts donated for seafarers far from home.

Members of congregations in the Burnham-On-Sea area have been filling the boxes over the last few weeks.

The boxes are filled with warm woollen items such as hats and gloves, toiletries, chocolates, sweets, small games and Christmas cards.

Liz Roost, Mission to Seafarers representative at St. Andrew’s Church, said: “The gifts are gratefully received by the many Seafarers who pass briefly through the docks on their journeys across the seas.”

“They are often away from their homes and families for months on end, while they bring to our island cargoes of food, consumer goods and so much more on which we have come to depend.”

“They have a thankless task, often in poor conditions and are so often forgotten as they move across the high seas in all weathers.”

“The Mission to Seafarers offer welcoming centres in ports across the world, to those of all faiths and none, and offer much help to those who fall into difficulty far from home in alien lands.”
