Burnham-On-Sea’s Xmas skating rink hailed a success by organisers

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s skating rink has been hailed a success after a busy festive holiday season.

The organisers from BEST (Burnham Events Social Team) say the synthetic plastic skating rink – which was set up in the Lynton Road car park – saw “numbers of visitors that were comparable to last year”.

Kathy Jones, Chair of BEST, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We would like to thank everybody for the fantastic support we have been given in our second year. We had an excellent response again, and we are delighted to say we have raised enough funds to be able to run the rink again for Christmas 2017.”

“We will be having a meeting with officers of Sedgemoor District Council in the near future about a few more ideas to improve this already excellent facility for our towns.”

“We are hoping to make it bigger and better for years to come. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our excellent volunteers within our team, and in particular our two first aiders, Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton and Lorraine Hamblin, who worked in the rink every day it was open. Some days it was extremely cold, but they carried on regardless and they deserve a big thank you.”

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton, Vice Chair of BEST, added: “The feedback we got from the users of the rink was excellent, and it was a very enjoyable experience watching everybody have so much fun.”

“We now have the equipment to expand the rink substantially, so we are looking at exciting times ahead in future years. We have a number of new events planned for this year, and we would welcome any more volunteers who wish to get involved.”

He added that the group is due to present a report to Burnham and Highbridge Town Council during February regarding the visitor numbers and finances of the rink. The council has recently approved the storage of the rink for £250/year.

Forthcoming events for the group are a Quiz Night at Burnham-On-Sea’s Ritz Social Club on Friday 13th January at 8pm, and an Evening of Clairvoyance with Gary Pullin at the Ritz Social Club on Saturday 18th February at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £5, are available at the club and Toycupboard in Burnham’s Pier Street.
