Burnham-On-Sea MP holds talks over travellers as new group arrives

A small group of travellers has set up camp in Burnham-On-Sea's seafront car park this week as the town's MP continues his efforts to change the laws controlling them with a meeting with a top minister.

Four caravans with adults and young children have been parked in the far southern most area of Burnham's Pier Street car park since Sunday, with washing hung between the vehicles, as pictured here.

It comes as Burnham's MP James Heappey met with the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid this week over the issue.

During the meeting, Mr Javid said the Government needs to look again at the powers held by local government to move illegal encampments on quickly and at the least expense.

Mr Heappey told "Sajid clearly understands the impact these illegal encampments have on the communities they visit."

"I am grateful the Government is looking again at this legislation. I hope to also contribute to the review and I will be inviting local authorities to do so as well."

The new group of travellers arrived at the weekend and have set up their camp on the southern side of the car park.
