from Burnham-On-Sea area join 1,000 at county dance event
from across the Burnham-On-Sea area were among more than 1,000 Somerset
primary school children celebrating the annual Folk Dance Festival
on Wells Cathedral Green at the weekend.
in its 43rd year, the Somerset Schools Folk Dance Festival
was held on Saturday, with 53 schools participating.
local schools included St Andrew's CofE Junior School, Burnham Community
Infants School, East Brent CofE First School, Brent Knoll CofE Primary
School, Lympsham CofE First School, Mark First and Pre-School Academy
and St Joseph's Primary School.
schools met at St Cuthberts Church yard, travelled up the
High Street in Wells watched by friends, families, shoppers and
tourists, and onto the Cathedral Green where the dancing took place.
Hayward, Executive and Liaison Officer for the Somerset Association
of Primary Headteachers and Officers (SAPHTO) and organiser of the
event, said: As always, the Folk Dance Festival is a major
date in the annual calendar of the County Council and is a great
example of all that is best about Somerset's Primary Schools.
Frances Nicholson, Somerset County Councils Cabinet Member
for Children and Families officially opened this years event.
Nicholson said: This is always a wonderful spectacle. The
children work hard on their dance steps before coming together in
this popular annual Festival, often watched by parents and grandparents
who themselves once took part. I am very proud to open the event
this year and enjoyed watching the many children from schools across
the County dance in this, the 43rd Festival.
