Burnham-On-Sea’s Zone Youth Club praised by council for turnaround

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Zone Youth Club has been praised by town councillors this week after a ‘monitoring visit’ took place to see how a grant donation of £3,500 from the council is being used.

As first reported here by Burnham-On-Sea.com last November, the club – based at the BAY Centre in Cassis Close – was set to close down when its original funding ran out.

However, the council gave it ‘lifeline funding’ of £3,500 to keep running and the club has since formed a new management committee and has undertaken its own fundraising to stay operational.

Members of the Town Council’s Policy and Finance Committee this week praised the club’s work with young people.

Cllr Andy Brewer said: “We had a very encouraging visit. We spoke with a number of the children and youth workers and got good responses from all of them.”

“We saw a hockey match underway involving the children – it was good physical activity with plenty of team spirit, and competitive too.”

“Overall, the Zone Youth Club is very worthy of our Town Council grant.”

Cllr John Parkes added: “The Zone Youth Club needs to be applauded on what they have achieved in creating a safe and welcoming place for youngsters. This was money well spent.”

The club’s Jayne Lilley thanked councillors, telling the meeting: “Thank you for your support and for believing in us.”
