Burnham-On-Sea volunteer raises £10,000 for tourist information centre

-

A dedicated volunteer who has raised over £10,000 to keep Burnham’s tourist information centre running has been thanked during the group’s AGM this week.

Margaret Fielder was thanked for her work in organising book and plant sales plus regular raffles for BIARS (Burnham Information And Rescue Support), which runs the seafront information centre.

She was presented with a certificate and a gift by the group’s Chairman, Tom Ashton, on behalf of the group, during the group’s AGM on Tuesay evening (June 26th).

More than 20 people attended, where a busy year of activities was reviewed.

Mr Ashton said it had been a “challenging year financially” but he praised the 40 volunteers’ dedication in running the centre.

Manager Ian Jefferies also thanked the centre’s helpers, adding that two thirds of them have been there from BIARS starting seven years ago, which shows the “huge dedication and commitment being put in.” He also thanked Sedgemoor District Council for their support of the centre.

He added that the centre’s footfall counter had recorded 49,857 visitors over the past year – which was slightly down on previous years, with poor weather cited as the likely reason.

Tom Ashton was re-elected as Chairman, with the Management Committee being Ian Jefferies, Sandra Hubbard, Kate Sigrist, Mark Newman, Gail Cruickshank, Colin Morris and Vicky Banham.
