A charity golf day was held at Brean Golf Club last Friday in aid of BARB Search & Rescue, raising £1,000 for the rescue hovercraft organisation.

It was the first time a golf day has been held for this cause, which also forms part of the 2018 Brean Captain’s Charities.

The successful event was a Pairs Betterball Stableford competition and the sun shone on the competitors as they took on the well-presented layout at Brean Leisure Park.

The winners, with an excellent 46 point total, were Brean members Wayne Barrett and Eric Jones.

The formidable duo won by a single point from two pairs on 45. Another Brean member, Jim Puddy, was joined by Dave Perrett to take second on a back nine countback from former Brean Professional David Haines and his daughter Jessie.

A chip in eagle at the long 12th for 5 stableford points was crucial for the fourth placed duo of Steve Hill and Pete Douglas as that helped then win another countback for the final prize on 44 points.

They relegated Club Captain Mike Carter and Andy Thomas and Ian and Malcolm Rogers out of the prize positions with the better back nine score.

The competitors enjoyed an excellent carvery after their round in the Bucket & Spade venue ahead of the prizegiving ceremony.

The final amount of money raised was a fraction under £1,000 and this was boosted by almost £300 from Brean Leisure Park employee’s Dan Parra and Nathan Heal who actually got themselves sponsored to play in the event.

Planning has already begun to make this a regular fixture on the calendar.

A BARB spokesman said: “We thank all those who took part and contributed in various ways to help the event run smoothly, from those at Brean Golf Club who helped run the day, to those who sponsored the event. It was a fun day that raised a great sum for our life-saving work. As a small local charity we rely fully on donations and are hugely grateful for the support!”
