Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called out on Sunday evening (April 8th) after several items of abandoned clothing were spotted on the town’s sea wall steps.

A walker had raised the alarm at 7.20pm, having come across several items of underwear and trousers on the steps near St Andrew’s Church, as pictured here.

“The team was paged by our Coastguards Operations Centre in Milford Haven – there had been a call from a concerned member of public after finding a set of clothes abandoned on the beach steps opposite St Andrew’s Church,” said a spokesman.

“After arriving on scene some of the team members donned protective gloves and inspected the items of clothing.”

“After a brief assessment the articles of clothing were found to be heavily soiled and the items involved did not point to someone in difficulty, and there were no visible signs of anyone entering the mud either.”

“We liaised with the ops room and concurred that there was no persons in danger and therefore we were cleared to stand down and return to station.”

“Once again our caring Burnham-On-Sea community was on the ball and dialled 999 asking for the Coastguards.”

“We were happy that this was a false alarm and the person did the right thing in calling.”
