Man in mud at Berrow sparks Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard call-out

-

Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called out on Thursday amid concern for a person seen far out on the mudflats at Berrow.

Coastguards were called to the beach at 2.20pm following a report of the man being spotted in mud.

“A person out for a walk along the beach had noticed someone who appeared to be a significant distance out in a very muddy area of the beach,” said a Burnham Coastguard spokesman.

“Concerned for their safety, they did the right thing and dialled 999 and asked for the Coastguards.”

“Knowing this could be a mud rescue, the team rapidly made their way to the scene, reported to be south of the Berrow wreck. As we approached we soon spotted an individual who matched the given description and who was making their way back to firm ground.”

“Once with them it soon became apparent that he had indeed been in the mud but was carrying out a survey of the beach and was trained and equipped to be in such situations.”

“This was obviously not known by the first informant and so they did exactly the right thing. As they will be surveying the beach regularly we gave some advice to them and asked that they contact our control room before heading into what could be seen as dangerous situations.”

“This was yet another example of the great community we have here in the Burnham-On-Sea area with people looking out for each other and taking action if they feel someone needs help.”
