Concerns for the welfare of a dog’s owners led to a call for Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and lifeboats on Sunday morning (April 8th).

The Coastguard team was paged at 10.48am when a dog was seen in the sea by a seafront walker with no owners initially visible at the southern end of the beach, opposite Quantock Court.

“It may have been that they had entered the water at some point either to retrieve the dog or had fallen and the dog had followed,” said a Burnham Coastguard spokesman.

“Burnham Lifeboats were already out on their training exercise and diverted along to the south beach towards the Yacht Club to check the situation.”

“Upon arrival it was clear that all was OK and there was no need for any kind of rescue. It was a false alarm this time.”

“It may have been the case that someone was in difficulty, by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguards we were able to check and ensure all persons were fine.”

“This was a false alarm with good intent. Never be discouraged from dialling 999 and asking for the Coastguard if something is happening to cause you concern.”
