Brean Golf Club tournament raises £5,000 for regional charities

The 28th annual Sports Celebrity Am took place last week at Brean Golf Club with 23 teams heading to the fairways.

The event, hosted by Brean Leisure Park, boosted the Injured Jockeys Fund and St Margaret's Hospice, with more than £5,000 raised between the two charities over the day.

After enjoying an excellent breakfast in the Tavern, the teams took to the course which was prepared by Robin Williams and his team.

The teams battled to accumulate the most stableford points and get their hands on the Tom Childs Memorial Trophy.

At the end of the day it was the team sponsored by Town & Country Flooring which scooped the top prize after handing in a very impressive score of 91 points.

Ex Bristol Rovers footballer Tony Pounder was joined in the winning quartet by Martyn Cahill, Andrew Stephens and George Fear as they led the way by a single point.

Runners up were the PWC sponsored team with 90 points made up of Matt Heal, Chris Brady and Gavin Holland alongside Brean Captain Elect Trevor Pitt.

Third place was claimed by Fire at Will led by Joe Lemon of Holiday Resort Unity Caravan Sales joined by brother Will Lemon, Justin Phillips and Phillip Strange.

The final two prizes on offer went to local teams with Club Captain Mike Carter steering his team consisting of Dan Broom, Ian Rogers and Steve Hill to an 87 point score and fourth position.

Jones Bros Builders took fifth with 85 points being scored by Wayne Barrett, Phil Hodgson and the Jones brothers Eric and Dave.

Emma Britton from BBC Radio Bristol and Patron of St Margaret's Hospice was on hand to thank the players for raising the money and to hand out the awards after another excellent meal following the round laid on in the Tavern.

Vice President of the Injured Jockeys Fund Jonathan Powell also took to the microphone to extend thanks on behalf of the IJF where he confirmed this is the longest running fundraising event for the Charity and valuable to the support of injured Jockeys.
