Burnham-On-Sea has seen its ‘busiest ever’ start to the tourist season thanks to the continuing heatwave.

The area has been sweltering in hot conditions for over a month and forecasters say the conditions are set to continue.

Geoff Lewis at seafront gift shop The Treasure Chest said: “Ice cream sales have been fantastic – we have seen our best-ever start to the season in the 26 years we’ve traded here.”

“It’s actually been physically challenging to keep up with sales at time – we just hope it continues for the six week summer holidays.”

And Mike Bond, owner of the The Esplanade Fish Bar, added: “It’s been very busy – the best start to a season we’ve seen for many years.”

Burnham-On-Sea Chamber of Trade says the footfall in the town centre has been boosted in recent weeks too. “The latest figures from the footfall cameras show the number of people in the High Street is up three per cent year-on-year thanks to the great weather,” said a spokesman.

Accomodation providers are also seeing strong bookings too, with many reporting occupancy is well up on previous years.

The hottest day of the current heatwave in Burnham was 30.1°C at 4.20pm on June 26th. The Burnham-On-Sea weather forecast shows that more hot weather is on the way.
