Burnham-On-Sea seafront flower beds grassed over to redirect funding into town centre

-

Several flower beds along Burnham-On-Sea’s Esplanade are to be grassed over and the money saved will instead be re-directed towards the town centre this summer.

The large flower beds at the far southern end of the seafront between the Yacht Club and Quantock Court, pictured here last year, will not be planted, the district council has confirmed.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Claire Faun, spokeswoman for Sedgemoor District Council, explained: “We have been in discussions with Burnham and Highbridge Town Council regarding the provision of their hanging baskets within the town centre. This work had previously been carried out by the Burnham in Bloom group for many years but unfortunately they are no longer able to do so.”

“It was suggested and subsequently agreed that because of difficulties in establishing and maintaining the beds at the far end of the Esplanade, due to the salt laden winds damaging or even killing the young plants and persistent problems with perennial/invasive weeds within the beds; that we would remove the last three beds and return the area to grass.”

She added: “The seven other seasonal beds still remain along the South Esplanade. The money that would be saved from not having to plant and maintain the three beds will be used to provide planted hanging baskets to enhance the Town Centre area.”

“Sedgemoor’s Clean Surroundings team will be working with the Town Council to install, water and maintain these baskets for all to appreciate.”

It comes just a few says after a shelter was demolished in the same part of the seafront.
