A team of Burnham-On-Sea wildlife carers had an unusual call-out this week when they were called by a member of the public to help a seagull.

The gull appeared to be covered in blood, said a concerned member of the public in a call to local animal welfare charity Secret World Wildlife Rescue.

But when the gull was brought back to Secret World in East Huntspill by the team, to their amusement and relief they discovered the red substance was in fact strawberry jam – not blood!

Samantha Hannay at Secret World Wildlife Rescue told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Jammy, as he’s known to Secret World staff, was given a thorough wash by our dedicated animal carers and will be released soon.”

In 2017 Secret World treated 503 gulls suffering from various illnesses and injuries. Secret World provides a 365-days a year service to rescue sick, injured or orphaned wildlife.

Members of the public who would like advice on how to look after wild animals or would like to report injured wildlife should call 01278 783 250.
