Town councillors are planning a programme of improvements in Burnham-On-Sea town centre to ‘smarten it up’ and encourage more visitors.

It comes after new figures reveal the number of vacant units in the town centre has risen to 10 per cent in a year.

Cllr Phil Harvey told a council meeting this week: “We should be concerned that vacancies are rising in the town centre and should consider a programme of improvements to encourage more people into Burnham and make it mnore welcoming.”

“An audit of the town centre is needed to smarten up the main areas and identify where painting, new signs and quick improvements are needed before the new holiday season.”

It comes after Burnham-On-Sea town centre resident Alex Turco spoke out at this week’s town council meeting to express his concern about the rising number of vacant units in the town centre, which has grown from 11 a year ago to 23 now.

Despite this, Burnham-On-Sea’s town centre footfall numbers are up, with data from the footfall cameras recording a 1.8% annual increase in the number of pedestrians in the High Street.

Burnham Chamber of Trade also has a programme of events and initiatives planned to further promote the town centre.
