Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and BARB’s rescue hovercrafts were called to Brean beach on Saturday afternoon (April 28th) after reports that two people and a dog were stuck in the mud.

A beach walker had spotted the people and was concerned for their safety and had done the right thing in dialling 999 and asking for Coastguards.

When Burnham and Weston Coastguards arrived on scene, they looked around for the first informant but found she had already left the beach.

BARB’s Spirit Of Lelaina II hovercraft was tasked to conduct a shoreline search to see whether anyone was in difficulty.

Two Burnham Coastguards also walked out to talk to several climbers who were on the south side of Brean Down, who confirmed they had seen the people and dog but there didn’t seem to be anything out of the ordinary.

“This was a well-intended call-out with thankfully nobody in need of rescuing,” said Coastguard Officer Dave Welland.

“We encourage people to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they see someone in danger, but also to stay nearby and, if safely possible, keep a visual watch on the persons. It can really help us and save time in an emergency.”

“It can also help to keep the person in difficulty calm to know some one is nearby.”
