Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club has been dealt a financial setback as wet weather has caused the cancellation of a popular fundraising car show.

The Burnham-On-Sea club was due to hold its annual VW show at Highbridge’s Oaktree Arena this coming weekend – but flooding has led to it being cancelled.

“This is a major fundraising event for us each year that raises around £2,000 – it’s vital for a small club like us,” Hillview’s Chairman, Duncan Britton, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“Due to the weather conditions over the past few days, the fields at the Oaktree where the VW owners camp and park up are water-logged, so we have regrettably had to call it off.”

“It’s a big setback for us – the event comes at the start of the season when funds are really needed to start the build of this year’s float.”

Hundreds of VW enthusiasts have flocked to the event in previous years, as pictured above and reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com here.

Duncan added that the decision not to hold Glastonbury Festival this year has been a further blow.

“The club also fundraises at the festival, but we won’t be able to do so this year because it’s a fallow year,” he explained.

He added that other local fundraising events in coming months “will be key” to ensure the club’s float is ready for the carnival season this November.
