14 new flats and a restaurant planned for Highbridge town centre

-

New proposals to turn this property in the centre of Highbridge into a new development of 14 flats have been met with opposition from town councillors this week.

On Monday night (September 27th), town councillors considered a revised planning application for the redevelopment of Canal House, which is situated in a prominent location at the junction of Market Street and Huntspill Road besides the A38 roundabout, as pictured here.

But despite the new building being reduced in height, town councillors have still decided to lodge an objection over the plans.

“Councillors still feel the proposed property would be out of keeping with the surrounding street scene and they are concerned about access issues, bearing in mind that residents would come across a narrow pavement onto a very busy roundabout,” Town Council Deputy Town Clerk Denise Emery told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“While its design states it is two and a half storeys high due to the proposals for masionettes in the roof, councillors still feel it would in fact be three storeys high,” she added.

The town council is to write to the county council’s highways department to seek its views on the access concerns.

Following concerns from town and district councillors earlier this year, Property Link submitted the revised planning application. The existing shops and flats at the site would be demolished to make way for a new, modern property, which would comprise 14 new flats. Sedgemoor District Council’s Development Control Committee will consider the scheme at its next meeting.
