Character and Key Views in Burnham

A design analysis was carried out by the Market and Coastal Towns Initiative to inform the design of the masterplan. The following images illustrate the key views and character areas of Burnham:

KEY VIEWS AND LINKAGES

Panoramic views west across the beach and channel form important views from the town and attract people to the seafront.

At low tide views from the beach back towards the edge of the town are also important. Views tend to be towards the seafront, with important views west along link streets towards the seafront.

St Andrews Church forms an important landmark within the town.

Views can be improved by the creation of new vistas and landmarks.

CHARACTER AREAS

Burnham-On-Sea can be seen to be made up of a number of character areas, for example the North Esplanade, St Andrews Church and Churchyard, the town, the Somerfields store and car parking, the South Esplanade, the Holiday Park, and the River Brue.

These areas have distinct characters and identities which need to be strengthened.
