Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Regeneration

A Masterplan for Burnham-on-Sea and Links to Highbridge

The inclusion of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge on the South West Regional Development Agency’s Market and Coastal Towns Initiative represents a unique opportunity to decide how change might happen in the future - to prepare a compelling vision for the town.
The ‘masterplan’, available by clicking here, shows how all the streets and spaces within Burnham can be joined together to create an attractive environment for residents and visitors.

The masterplan could be implemented via a combination of major ‘one-off’ investment and by applying higher and consistent standards to normal improvements carried out by local authorities. In addition development of key sites can be pursued to bring about an improvement in built form, the creation of new spaces and investment in the town.

The key site in this respect is the Somerfields site. Taking forward such projects will require negotiation with landowners and current users and may take some years to achieve.

The Three Basic Elements:

The image shown on the right emphasizes the importance of different parts of the town and suggests ways in which they should fit together.

The three key elements are: BEACH - TOWN - STRAND.

If these key elements are strengthened and enhanced, it is believd that the image of Burnham as a whole will become clearer and more memorable whilst its essential identity will be protected.

The masterplan includes a wide range of potential projects:

BEACH
Refurbishment of the pier;
Removal of debris from the beach.

TOWN
Regeneration of the town streets using a palette of high quality materials and design principles;
Creation of a series of public spaces including a space to become the civic heart of the town;
Regeneration of Marine Cove gardens;
Development of an arts strategy;
Identification of potential key development sites within the town.

STRAND
Creation of a wonderful linear park along the esplanade;
Refurbishment of the River Brue link to Highbridge.

The overall design objectives are:

Setting standards of design and quality;
Bringing unity to the streets and spaces within the town;
Clarifying vehicle and pedestrian movement and hierarchy;
Creating a more attractive, diverse and comfortable public realm;
Creating new public spaces, including a new space to become the civic heart;
Building on local urban and natural character - Beach - Town - Strand;
Creating a new linear park;
Strengthening links to Highbridge and beyond;
Creating a stronger and more memorable image of Burnham.
