fire disrupts Highbridge
SOMERSET
fire brigade spent much of Friday February 3rd dealing with a
huge blaze that swept through six tetraced homes in Church Street,

start to spring for town
BURNHAM-On-Sea
shivered in a winter chill on Wednesday, March 1st, as snow and
sub-zero temperatures struck on a day seen by some as the start
of Spring. Several light downfalls of snow passed through the
town on Wednesday, briefly leaving some on the ground,

tackle heath blaze
FIREFIGHTERS
from across Somerset tackled a major heathland fire at Crook Peak,
near Burnham-On-Sea, on Monday March 20th. Seven crews from Somerset
Fire and Rescue service dealt with the large gorse fire on the
northern side of the hillside, which raged for more than four

lotto win for town family
MEMBERS of
a National Lottery syndicate from Burnham-On-Sea are planning
their futures after scooping nearly £400,000 on a jackpot
win. The five-strong family syndicate run Poples Domestic Appliance
Repair Services in Abingdon Street and have been celebrating their
win.

Rover lost in mud drama
THE owners
of this Land Rover were said to be "distraught" on Wednesday
April 12th after their vehicle dramatically became the latest
victim of thick mud on Brean beach this week. Coastguards from
Burnham-On-Sea were called, but there was nothing they could do
to save it.

Jet skiers' van pulled to safety
BURNHAM-On-Sea's
hovercraft crew came to the rescue of a group of four jet skiers
whose van had become stranded in the sea on Sunday, April 16th.
Crowds of Easter holidaymakers lined the town's seafront to watch
the rescue unfold after the Volkswagen became stuck, as shown

Fishing boat stranded in mud
A FISHING boat became the latest victim of Burnham-On-Sea's
treacherous mud and soft sand on Saturday afternoon (April 29th)
after it became stranded at the end of the town's jetty. Boat
owner Gerald Smith said he misjudged the tide and got stuck in
the mud next to the jetty.

storm wows onlookers
A POWERFUL electrical
storm rumbled and crackled over Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday night
(May 10th), giving walkers along the town's seafront an impressive
light show. We took several photos of
the storm as its mixture of fork and sheet lightning passed over.

dealt with one of their most unusual incidents of the year on
Saturday evening (May 13th) when a holidaymaker became trapped
inside a public toilet block. Red-faced

DEFIANT
Sir David Bellamy is the latest celebrity to give his backing
to protesters campaigning against a controversial wind farm on
the outskirts of Burnham-On-Sea. The environmentalist met members
of the 'kNOll to Wind Farm' action group in the fields
where the wind turbines are proposed on Tuesday. More...

movie boost for Brean
BREAN
Down is being transformed in to a Hollywood movie set ahead of
the filming of a brand new blockbuster at the site on Monday (June
5th).
The
cast and crew of The Golden Age are putting mock cannons
and a huge film set into place on the top of the Down.

BURNHAM-On-Sea.com
has been crowned the region's top Web site of 2006 by winning
the coveted 'Web Site of The Year' award
at the annual South West Media Awards. At
a glitzy awards ceremony on Tuesday (June 6th), the Web site was
presented with the top award.

300 complete triathlon
THE
20th annual Burnham-On-Sea triathlon - a 500m swim followed by
a 20km cycle and then a 5km run - took place on Sunday (June 11th)
and attracted over
300 competitors. But it was an 85-year-old Burnham pensioner who
stole the limelight.

raises £5k for charity
MORE than £5,000 was raised for Secret World Wildlife
Rescue Centre from this week's fundraising firewalk, the charity
said on Saturday (June 24th). Earlier in the week, we reported
that 28 people had walked across 20ft of burning embers during

escape for crash pair
A BURNHAM-On-Sea
road was closed on Thursday evening (June 29th) after a vehicle
span off the road into a ditch. A lady and a young boy had a lucky
escape by crawling out of the car uninjured shortly after the
accident at around 5pm during the rush hour.

light up for procession
AN illuminated
night-time procession of boats began the 2006 Burnham-On-Sea Sailing
Club Regatta on Friday night (June 30th). Onlookers lined the
town's seafront to watch the 22 illuminated boats move from the
River Brue pontoons and past Burnham. More...

girls spark mud drama
BURNHAM-On-Sea's
hovercraft, two RNLI lifeboats and an RAF helicopter were called
out after seven members of a netball team briefly became trapped
in mud at Berrow beach on Friday afternoon (June 30th). The rescue
services rushed to the incident. More...

Stert swimmers rescued
BURNHAM-On-Sea's
D-Class lifeboat and hovercraft were called out at 7.10pm on Monday
evening (July 17th) after seafront walkers alerted Coastguards
when they saw to their amazement five children swimming across
from Burnham to Stert Island.

race is runaway success!
CROWDS
of onlookers turned out to watch Brean Leisure Park's first pig
racing and donkey derby of the summer season this week. Tuesday's
event raised money for local good causes and is the traditional
curtain-raiser to several weeks of summer events at the park.

SIZZLING summer
temperatures are taking their toll on the landscape around Burnham,
with mud on Berrow beach drying up and creating unusual scenes
this week. The
parched mudflats at Berrow have dried up in several places and
broken into pieces.

WALKERS along
Burnham-On-Sea's Esplanade were treated to a glimpse of an historic
50 year-old ship as it glided past the town on Friday morning
(July 28th). The Balmoral was on its annual trip up the River
Parrett to Bridgwater to collect people booked on an excursion.

LARGE crowds of spectators
lined Burnham-On-Sea's seafront to watch the annual Stert Island
Swim on Sunday morning (July 30th). Dozens of intrepid swimmers
from all over the South West were participating in the 2,400m
swim to Stert Island and back.

HIGH-octane
action came to Brean Leisure Park, near Burnham-On-Sea, on Wednesday
night (August 2nd) when hundreds
of holidaymakers crowded into the park's arena to watch Scott
May's Daredevil Stunt Show. The show included 90 minutes of stunts.

freed from Brean mud
TWO horses trapped in treacherous mud on Brean beach were
pulled free by Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and a Bridgwater fire
crew on Friday afternoon (August 11th). The
animals had quickly sunk to the top of their legs after running
out into the mud

rescue hovercraft for Burnham-On-Sea was officially unveiled on
Saturday August 19th during the town's third annual ESCAPE day.
A special service for the brand new £15,000 craft, called

BREAN Beach
was transformed into a movie set on Monday morning (August 21st)
when filming of a major new BBC film got underway. To
the sound of 'lights, camera, action', film crews from Granada
TV were shooting a new version of Dracula, to be broadcast on

DOZENS of
music events are being held across Burnham-On-Sea during a two-day
folk music festival this weekend (September 2nd and 3rd). Musicians
from across the country are gathering in the town for FolkFest
2006 to play a varied mixture of live music.

ceremony held in sea
SIX MEMBERS of
a Burnham-On-Sea church waded into the waters of Bridgwater Bay
on Sunday morning, September 10th, to be baptized in a ceremony
in the sea. The Community Church members picked the sea instead
of the usual swimming pool.

Sunken
boat rescued in Brue
A FIVE-and-a-half
hour bid to retrieve a sunken fishing boat from the treacherous
banks of the River Brue ended successfully on Sunday (Sep 17th)
when the craft was refloated with the help of Burnham's rescue
hovercraft. BARB was called to help refloat the 21ft cruiser.

marathon beats the rain!
MORE than 330
runners pounded the streets of Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday (October
1st) during the town's annual half marathon. The weather promised
to be wet, but it was fine for much of the race. We have full

Storm batters seafront
HUGE
waves battered Burnham-On-Sea on Friday night (Oct 6th) as high
tides coincided with gale-forced winds. Waves broke over the sea
wall along the southern Esplanade, leaving pools of sea water
along roads and pavements. The town was earlier put on Flood Watch.

'Reckless'
youngsters risk fines
YOUNGSTERS
who filmed themselves standing on top of a car whilst it was driven
along a beach in the Burnham-On-Sea area are breaking a bye-law
and risk heavy penalties. Alarming footage of youngsters using
vehicles on local beaches has come to light this week.

RAF jet lights up town's sky
AN
IMPRESSIVE light show was visible in the skies near Burnham-On-Sea
on Tuesday afternoon (Oct 24th) when an RAF aircraft tested its
anti-missile flares during training. The Hercules aircraft was
spotted circling Bridgwater Bay at 2pm, then letting off the flares.

fireworks display was watched by thousands of people along Burnham-On-Sea's
seafront on Sunday evening (Nov 5th) as the town's carnival festivities
officially got underway.

Ghost Ship steals the show!
A
HUGE crowd
of over 30,000 people lined Burnham-On-Sea's streets on Monday
night (Nov 6th) to watch the town's annual carnival. The incredible
Ghost Ship float from Gremlins Carnival Club stole the show, winning

rescues lights switch-on
BIG
crowds flocked to Burnham-On-Sea
for the light-up of the town's new Christmas lights on Saturday
(Nov 25th), resulting in ITV West News presenter Peter Rowell
missing the big switch-on. Burnham's Mayor, Eric Gill, was asked

winds cause damage
POWERFUL
80mph winds swept through Burnham-On-Sea in the early hours of
today (Sunday Dec 3rd), causing major
damage in several parts of the town. A shop front in the High
Street was blown away by the gales and several trees were down
