Busy
year for Burnham-On-Sea lifeboat station reviewed at AGM
Almost
40 people, including Burnham-On-Sea's Mayor Pauline Pollard, attended
Friday's Annual General Meeting of Burnham-On-Sea RNLI.
The
meeting was opened by Chairman Graham Wills, who thanked everyone
for attending, and gave a short account of his involvement over
the past year.
After
reports by Operations Manager Ricky Holmes, Treasurer Mike Ross,
Education Officer Tony Deahl, Sea Safety Officer Chris Spencer,
Souvenir Secretary Mary Summers and Fundraising Treasurer and
Chairman Jan Pearce, the meeting was addressed by Barry Wagstaff,
General Manager of the RNLI South-West division, based at Saltash.
Barry
talked about how the RNLI rapid response unit is now available
24 hours a day and updated those present about the new Tamar and
Atlantic 85 lifeboats which are being rolled out.
He
concluded by saying: "Burnham is a success story, and has
come a long way in such a short time. What a strong team! Martin
Cox, the former Operations Manager, did a good job starting up
the station from scratch, and your success is all due to good
teamwork!"
Operations
Manager Ricky Holmes took over last summer from Martin and has
been in post for almost six months. He said there had been 24
launches during the last year and all the crew competence-based
training was up-to-scratch. After a short Power point presentation
about the recent Arco Dart exercise, Ricky thanked Martin for
his past work, Graham Wills for his support as Chairman, and welcomed
Rodney Southwell to the station as an additional Deputy Launch
Authority.
Treasurer
Mike Ross explained the accounts in detail, while Souvenir Secretary
Mary Summers thanked the station volunteers who had helped to
sort out the shop. She said: "We all now feel part of the
station and an integral part of the RNLI." She added that
more volunteers were still needed in the shop and any help would
be appreciated.
Visits
and Education Officer Tony Deahl explained how he had organised
many visits to the station and also been to local schools to talk
about the RNLI. So far this year he had had formal contact with
approximately 755 youngsters.
Fund-raising
Treasurer and Chairman Jan Pearce explained how successful the
fund-raising had been this year, but added that more volunteers
are needed.
Sea
Safety Officer Chris Spencer stated that over 80 sea safety contacts
had been made so far, and his two assistants, Nick Redding and
Dave Humphrey, were going to be busy carrying out sea safety checks.
