RNLI welcomed by school pupils
The
RNLI's annual fundraising SOS Day was marked at Beechfield School
in Highbridge by the children being allowed to wear trainers for
the day in return for a donation to the RNLI.
At
a special assembly, Burnham Lifeboat Station Education Officer
Tony Deahl, accompanied by crew member Chaze Mellhuish, held a
question and answer session in order to inform the children about
the work of the RNLI.
Chaze
was able to demonstrate the protective equipment he was wearing
and the lifesaving devices incorporated in his lifejacket. He
was also able to tell the children about some of his first hand
experiences as a crew member on the boat and the intensive training
that all RNLI personnel have to go through.
The
children asked lots of searching questions and learnt a great
deal about the work of the RNLI and the importance of seaside
safety. The school raised £88 and this will be presented
at another assembly later in the year.
Each
summer all of the Year 2 children from Beechfield school visit
the lifeboat station. The RNLI, BARB and the Coastguard are always
willing to accommodate schools and youth groups for visits in
order to promote safety by the sea.
The
school pupils - Harry, Bradley, Ishrat, Kaycie, Jack, Georgia,
Kassara and Jake - are pictured here.
