Coastguards and lifeboats called to Brean Down climbers

Fears that this group of climbers had been cut-off by the incoming tide at Brean Down prompted the launch of two lifeboats on Monday afternoon (May 4th).

The four climbers had been spotted at around 4pm scaling the cliffs of the southern side of the Down, with the fast-incoming tide beneath them.

Burnham Coastguards were called to the scene by a beach warden - and two Coastguard officers clambered out along the foot of the Down to check on the climbers' safety.

A few minutes later, the lifeboat crews arrived on scene and were also able to confirm that the group were not in any danger.

"It transpired that the four persons were climbers intent on climbing the Down, and were not in distress," a Burnham RNLI spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

"They were surprised at the appearance of the rescuers. This was a false alarm with good intent, although it perhaps serves as a reminder that activities such as this would be best advised to the Coastguard before being undertaken."

The group were happy to be left at the scene to walk back to shore after the high tide.
