Delegates
from Burnham-On-Sea RNLI attend RNLI Coastal Conference

Four
members of Burnham-On-Sea's RNLI operations team joined more than
150 other delegates across the south west in attending the organisation's
Coastal Conference
on November 16th and 17th.
They
were there to discuss the RNLI's
latest plans to maintain its reputation as one of the best rescue
organisations in the world, along with the RNLI's crew training
campaign, which aims to raise £10million over the next five
years using the message 'train one, save many.'
The
Burnham-On-Sea group comprised Martin Cox (RNLI Lifeboat Operations
Manager), Mike Lang (RNLI Lifeboat Press Officer), Ricky Holmes
(RNLI Tractor Driver and Boathouse Manager) and Glenn Cutter (An
experienced RNLI lifeboat helmsman).
Guest
speakers at the event included those from the Police and Royal
Navy, who talked about media tactics and Naval addiction policies,
while RNLI speakers treated the participants to sessions about
improvements to existing procedures and listened to delegates'
concerns during open forum sessions.
There
was also the chance for delegates to participate in syndicate
sessions on pre-chosen aspects of RNLI operations, with the results
fed by spokespersons back to the conference for discussion during
the final open forum session on Thursday.
Burnham-On-Sea
Lifeboats Press Officer Mike Lang said: "It is normally easy
to focus just on the issues around one's own lifeboat station."
"The
conference provoked exchanges of experiences and ideas, reminding
me of the highly organised RNLI machine that provides instant
backup when needed."
"It
was also a timely reminder that the RNLI as a charity relies very
much on volunteers like those from Burnham and that all the backup
and the equipment we use is still provided by public donation
alone."
"I
also found it good to meet and converse with representatives from
the neighbouring Weston-super-mare and Minehead RNLI lifeboat
stations."
The
conference was led by Michael Vlasto (RNLI Operations Director)
on the Wednesday and backed up by George Rawlinson (Staff Officer
Operations (Divisons)), who led the conference on the Thursday
morning.
Mr
Rawlinson said it had been a good conference, with a useful two-way
exchange of ideas, and he added how the stage was set for challenging
times ahead as the RNLI moved forward "in a very good way."
