Think
safe this Easter put engine checks and lifejackets first
say the RNLI
Lifeboat
crews in the south west are asking boat owners to check their
engines before putting to sea this Easter.
Engine
failure is the number one reason for lifeboat launches at this
time of year. A few simple checks can ensure those getting back
on the water don't become a rescue statistic. The life-saving
charity is also reminding people to wear a lifejacket.
The
Easter holiday is traditionally a busy time for the RNLI as boat
users head back out to sea after the long winter break. Over the
Easter period last year, RNLI lifeboats in the south and south
west launched 22 times and rescued 31 people in distress.
Keith
Colwell, RNLI Sea Safety Manager in the south and south west,
says although the RNLI exists to save lives at sea, the charity
also believes prevention is better than cure: "Its
common sense really. Before you put your boat onto the water,
just take a little time to carry out some simple checks. Make
sure the engine is serviced after the winter break, check and
update your engine spares such as fuel filters, water pump impellers
and drive belts."
"And
ensure you have the right tools on your boat so you can sort out
any minor problems for yourself. Its also important to carry
an alternative means of propulsion; on a yacht that means sails,
but on a motorboat carry a spare engine and an anchor, and on
a smaller vessel, a pair of oars."
"Tell
people where you are going and when you plan to return. Always
wear a lifejacket when afloat and remember the water is at its
coldest at this time of year. Dont forget to check your
VHF radio is working and that your mobile phone is charged up.
But remember the radio is the best option because everyone on
the water can hear your emergency call. And keep an eye on the
weather and tides."
RNLI
lifeguards will also be on duty at 13 beaches in Cornwall and
Devon this Easter providing advice to beach users on how to stay
safe.
